My Soul, My Life, My All

My Soul, My Life, My All

 by Coach Debbie

During a recent church service I had to fight tears.  You know, the embarrassing kind, where you sob uncontrollably?  The piano played and my heart was so moved.

You likely know the song, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," but in case you want a refresh on this song that's over 300 years old, listen to this while reading the lyrics.  He wrote this song (one of his 700+ hymns) in preparation for a communion service.

Side note, I learned that the songwriter did not love the church music of his day and complained about it to his dad, who basically responded with sarcasm to make his own music then.

"When I Survey the Wondrous Cross"
Text by Isaac Waatts
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride.
See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Did you rush through the lyrics?  I probably would too.  Go back and read them again, slower this time.

How neat that this powerful song is based on Galatians 6:14 which reads:

"May I never boast

except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

through which the world has been crucified to me,

and I to the world."

May the Lord move so deeply and tangibly in your life, friend.  May you ponder His immense sacrifice for you.  May you reflect on how great a love He has for you.  May you gladly give your soul, your life, your all to Him.
