Boundaries: Restriction or Freedom?

Boundaries: Restriction or Freedom?

We live in a world that hates boundaries.  I think it’s probably always been that way, but maybe we’re a bit extra because we live in a time and place where we want to define our own everything, even God.  The world doesn’t understand the concept of freedom in Christ.  I mean, how can following all these “rules” mean freedom.  That is just not even possible, right?

Well, yes it is.

As I’ve personally grown in my faith, I’m slowly learning that the more I surrender to the boundaries that God has created for me, the more they are defined and the more freedom I feel.  You too?

What if boundaries aren’t for restriction, but instead to help us step away from fear as well as the pressure we put on ourselves to never mess up and to really live in FREEDOM!

A life without boundaries is a life of slavery.  Slavery to self which is in turn slavery to sin.

So how does this work when we’re talking about food and fitness?

When we define our own rules and restrictions and focus on trying harder and doing better, we usually fail and that leads us further and further into the version of slavery that is misery because we can’t do it well enough.

When we live in the boundaries of God’s character, nature, and commands we find freedom, grace and mercy.  The greatest gifts!

What does this lead to in our eating?  Moderation.  What does that look like?  Well, it’s different for you than it is for me.

For example, you might be able to eat one bit of ice cream and be satisfied.  I know I can’t do that, so my boundary is different.

I might be able to drink one glass of wine socially.  That might be a challenge that you know your flesh can’t handle.

Same goes for fitness.  A boundary can keep us from doing too little OR too much!

Today, I pray that you might better understand the boundaries and the freedom that Christ provides.  It only comes from Him.  May he convict us where He desires change, but may he provide a sense of freedom in the places that we are condemning ourselves.

He is perfect.  His mercies are great.  His freedom is like no other.  His boundaries are in place because He loves us too much to leave us to our own devices.  May we rest in His truth!

Blessings-

Emily
