My Favorite Parenting Books

If you’ve been around for a while, you might know that I’m a huge fan of books, especially Audible.  I’m a huge fan of all things based on Christian living and apologetics, business, and you guessed it, parenting!

I’ve been disappointed in the past when I’ve gotten super excited about a book only to find, that while it reinforced my values and parenting from a Biblical perspective, it didn’t really help me with practical implementation.  I’m left with the question, this is GREAT, but can you give me some help on how to apply it?

Recently, I’ve been super duper excited about a few parenting books that I feel have really gotten it RIGHT in the practical department and I’m excited to share them with you today!

  1. Boy Mom by Monica Swenson.  The BEST book I’ve ever read/listened to specific to raising boys with a Biblical perspective in the day and age we’re living in.  Monica dives into all of the hard things including what boys need from Moms as well as how to tackle tough issues like social media, friends and independence.
  2. For The Love of Discipline by Sara Wallace. Also a boy mom, Sara dives into the specific topic of discipline.  What does the Bible teach us?  How much is too much?  Too Little?  What is the purpose of our discipline?  How do we make sure our kids get this message?  Filled with great tips and practical application, Sara does a Great job teaching us how to focus on heart change. My favorite takeaway was her use of “Word Bundles” to help send specific messages to our children.
  3. The Connected Child. An imperative read for those who are adoptive or foster parents or are considering either.  A great way to gain perspective on the needs of children with trauma, loss, or other life challenges.  This book included more takeaways than I can count for the situation we’re in, but more than anything helped me realize how to best come alongside my foster children.

Bonus Reads

These are not parenting related, but I am loving the following:

  1. The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer.  We know we need to slow down, this book helps us realize WHY and HOW.  My favorite chapter was the one based on Simplicity.  I also enjoyed all of the history that he shared on HOW we got to the hurried state we live in and how Jesus lived and taught us  to live.
  2. The Imperfect Disciple by Jared Wilson. A great discipleship book for all of us who can’t get our acts together.  Profound and simple at the same time, Jared is a gifted writer who will keep your attention as he walks you through what it really means to be a disciple of Jesus.
  3. Called To Create by Jordan Raynor. Jordan tells the personal stories of many entrepreneurs and creatives who have used their God-given talents to make a difference through their work while glorifying God in the process.
